“The Coastal First Nations is an alliance of First Nations on British Columbia’s North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii. The Coastal First Nations include Wuikinuxv Nation, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xaixais, Nuxalk Nation, Gitga’at, Metlakatla, Old Massett, Skidegate, and Council of the Haida Nation.”
“The Coastal First Nations was set up to support member First Nations achieve the following goals:
- To develop land and marine use plans that provide ecosystem-based management over their traditional territories and special protection for specific areas;
- To develop First Nations’ economic opportunities in the areas of forestry, fisheries, renewable energy, carbon credits and tourism within an ecosystem-based management framework;
- To develop a management framework for shared decision making over the lands, waters and resources within traditional territories; and
- To develop new short- and long-term capacity building approaches to support First Nations’ sustainable development initiatives.
The Coastal First Nations are entering a period of transition, moving from a developmental stage—planning and laying the groundwork—into an implementation phase.”
